Although a gummy smile does not affect the function and health of your mouth, it can make you feel self-conscious about your smile.

Here at Dr Andrew Baderski’s Dental Practice we understand the importance of a beautiful smile, which is why we provide a range of cosmetic solutions, in addition to restorative and general dentistry.

What causes a gummy smile?

There are a variety of reasons that may cause you to develop more gum than usual. This problem can be caused by hyperactive muscles, unusual jaw growth, abnormal tooth eruption, as well as many other factors.

What is a gum lift?

A gummy smile is simply where a patient has developed more gum than the average smile displays, and the result can be aesthetically unpleasing for the individual. Gum lifts exist as a means of rectifying this issue and can effectively raise the gum line. The severity of a gummy smile is determined by the gum to tooth ratio. There are three basic categories of a gummy smile:

  • Mild – Your gum tissue covers up to 25% of the length of your teeth.
  • Moderate – Your gum tissue covers between 25% and 50% of your teeth.
  • Advanced – Gum tissue encompasses 50% to 100% of your smile.

Tell me about the process… and the results

The process itself involves a dental laser which is used to remove the excess gum and seal the affected tissue as it progresses. This is done to help ensure the treatment is made as simple and untraumatic as possible, leaving no need for stitches or other invasive surgical methods. The procedure can be conducted in a way that is virtually pain free and allows for a greatly improved exposure of the natural teeth with less gum visible in your new, beautiful smile. Depending on your gum-to-tooth ratio, porcelain dental caps may be bonded to your visible teeth, which will correct your gum-to-tooth ratio. These caps can also improve the alignment and colouring of your teeth. Crowns, veneers, caps, and invisible braces are just a few examples of ways we can improve your smile.

Am I a suitable candidate for a gum lift?

You do not have to have a certain percentage of gum-to-tooth ratio in order to qualify for corrective treatments. If you are unhappy with the appearance of your teeth or smile, we are here to help you regain your confidence and correct your gummy smile. However, everyone’s smile and teeth are unique and different, and cosmetic or surgical treatment may not be ideal for every single individual with a gummy smile.

Your treatment options to fix your gummy smile will largely depend upon your tooth eruptions. During your consultation here at Dr Andrew Baderski’s Dental Practice we will conduct a full mouth examination to assess your gums and determine the most appropriate treatment.

Dr Andrew Baderski will walk you through the entire process during this consultation to ensure you are fully informed about the procedure and the expected outcomes to ensure your satisfaction.
